Testing Android Apps
What is the state of the art of android development? What's best done in an emulator? What's best done through conventional unit tests? Has anyone found libraries like robolectric to be helpful? Not that anyone here has ever written a bug of course. :)

Roundtable: Future of Mobile in Media
Android, Mobile vision
37 attendees
Roundtable 2 - 3/26/11 - Mobile Technology
Twitter: #MobMediaPub
Facebook page: new-mobile-media.com
Ask tough questions, get real answers from mobile tech and digital branding experts. For the roundtables, we will discuss the topics crucial to understanding the future of mobile in media. All participants are invited to bring questions or challenges from their business to address in a roundtable format.Could networks like Al Jazeera, or others, win new media markets?Fox Network and CBS are the most politically right-biased networks in the public view. NPR is loosing government funding for being too much to the left. US media is notorious for lack of objective journalism. Networks like http://english.aljazeera.net/ are gaining new audiences. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said: "Al Jazeera is 'Real News', U.S. Losing 'Information War' [..] Al Jazeera has been the leader in that are literally changing people’s minds and attitudes. And like it or hate it, it is really effective” Are eBooks a new form of journalism?Writing of a magazine-article-length eBook and publishing it almost overnight is becoming media of choice for experts who need to get the information fast and to maximum amount of people using social media distribution. This has many advantages over publishing in a single magazine (months of waiting and dozens of rejections), or a website (hard to edit if not your own site). Because of wide proliferation of eReaders and tablets, eBooks are also becoming easier to consume then Websites as readers can download them for later reading. Will Social Media become New Media?
Do you remember the "Long Tail" theory? The major media outlets can only cover the "majority interest", in fact a lot of news agencies are closing foreign offices, not to mention inability to cover "ultra-local" events. Many agencies outsource writing to freelance reporters with mix results. Twitter is already a source of instant news for many. Will Social Media, and Crowd-Sourcing play significant role in mainstream journalism. Will they undertake editing, analizing and polishing of materials coming from their Social Networks?

A smartphone is a mobile phone that offers more advanced computing ability and connectivity than a contemporary basic feature phone.Smartphones and feature phones may be thought of as handheld computers integrated within a mobile telephone, but while most feature phones are able to run applications based on platforms such as Java ME, a smartphone allows the user to install and run more advanced applications based on a specific platform. Smartphones run complete operating system software providing a platform for application developers. A smartphone can be considered as a Personal Pocket Computer (PPC) with mobile phone functions, because these devices are mainly computers, although quite smaller than a desktop computer (DC). Additionally a PPC (Personal Pocket Computer) is more personal than a DC (desktop computer).
Growth in demand for advanced mobile devices boasting powerful processors, abundant memory, larger screens, and open operating systems has outpaced the rest of the mobile phone market for several years. According to a study by ComScore, over 45.5 million people in the United States owned smartphones in 2010 and it is the fastest growing segment of the mobile phone market, which comprised 234 million subscribers in the United States. Despite the large increase in smartphone sales in the last few years, smartphone shipments only make up 20% of total handset shipments, as of the first half of 2010.

The Google Android Mobile Platform Turns 3 Years in November 2010. It has been three years since Google launched the Android mobile platform.Android is a mobile operating system initially developed by Android Inc., a firm purchased by Google in 2005. Android is based upon a modified version of the Linux kernel. It is a participant in the Open Handset Alliance. An application program ("app") called "Market" is preinstalled on most Android devices and allows users to browse and download apps published by third-party developers, hosted on Android Market. The website, rather than the Market app itself, provides details of some of the available apps, in particular those that are termed "Featured", "Top Paid" and "Top Free". On October 25, 2010 the official AndroidDev twitter account announced that the Android market had surpassed the 100,000 app milestone.

Why study Android?
Android has over 60 phones currently on the market, 14 tablets from most major manufacturers are coming out this year. Android started to sell more units than iPhone or Blackberry. There are Android TV boxes, Android in GM's car navigation and emergency systems, Android VOIP desk phones, eBook readers like Alex and B&N Nook and many other devices...
Android becomes the next wave of technology which resembles the Internet wave circa 1996-99. If you are a developer and you are not learning mobile development, you simply miss the biggest job opportunity of this decade.
For every website, company or problem to be solved there will be a question "Is there an app for that?". We want to make sure that the answer is "Yes! There is an app..."
There are 300,000 businesses in Chicago alone, a large part of them will want at least a simple mobile app to connect to their clients better than a Website can do, the opportunity if incredible.

1. Intro
To accelerate the growth and acceptance of the Android OS through the creation and promotion of development events and to foster a respectful community environment that allows its members to openly and freely share their knowledge and ideas about Android, the next 24th of April various Android groups will come together to host the first International Android Code Sprint.
To facilitate a structure that can accommodate people with various levels and interest, we are proposing a set of levels that should help to guide people in the process of choosing a project, and the team to set up the projects based on their complexity.
Here is the scale:
Level 0: I need help installing the SDK.
Level 1: I have the SDK running and I've looked the Tutorials and API examples
Level 3: I have one or more Apps in the market
Level 4: I have a good knowledge of Android and deep knowledge in some aspects (Web Integration, OpenGL, NDK, etc.)
Level 5: I have a superb knowledge of Android.
Level E: I am a Entrep., designer, or belong to a related field and have an interest in mobile development
Based on this we could setup projects and groups with like this:
Group 1, people from Level 0 to 3. This project(s) would have practical implementations of: basic layouts, events, widgets, intents, array adapters, and one maybe a permanent storage, sensors or maps.
Group 2, people from Level 3 to 5. This project(s) would encompass: Group 1 topics + advance events, widgets, services, media capture, LBS...
Group 3, people from Level 4 and 5. This project(s) would go beyond the topics of the other groups, and might also be work in some platform level changes or Dalvik level projects.
Any code generated will be available publicly and will have an Apache License to maximized the later benefit of all the participants - and beyond, - unless in the license is in conflict with some pre-existent license.
Each city can work on the projects they like. However, here are suggestions for projects:
2. Project proposals:
Group 1
- Porra: Office Betting pool.
- TMB times: When is your next city bus coming
Group 2
- OpenBicing: This is a bicing app that implements some fairly intelligent caching layer (at the server level). We've been talking about implementing some new features. And the author also would like to work ways of getting the app running in other bicing services across EU.
- Geocashing + forusquare + hidden treasure combo game.
- organize meetups application
Group 3
- Working on issues at code.google.com/p/android might be also a nice idea!
