The Google Technology User Group of Melbourne ordinarily meets on the last Monday of the month at ThoughtWorks on Level 15, 303 Collins Street, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

The meetings are conducted at 6pm and typically last over an hour. Current meetings are focused on technical presentations and extended Q&A on Google technologies but in future we will be inviting members that develop applications using Google technology to give brief demos of their work.

We have informal networking afterwards and an invitation for a late supper and drinks at another venue is open to all.Our meetings will always be free and open to the general public. However, we may have to limit attendance based on interest and the size of our meeting space.

In order to find out early about upcoming events, we strongly recommend you join our discussion board for the sign-up link when a new event is announced.In addition, we maintain a calendar that lists our upcoming events. As topics and presenters are finalized, this calendar is updated accordingly.

We've got two talks in one night for our February Event: Sort, Cleanse and Extend your Data the Googley wayJoin us as we introduce Google Refine, a powertool for cleansing messy data.Working offline, Leon Gouletsas (GTUG Community Organiser) will guide you through this tool to apply patterns and formulas to sort and slice your data. 2010 May 5	Programming in Go Go more... Go is a new, experimental, open-source programming language. It has a succinct, clear syntax, a flexible (static) type system, and built-in concurrency primitives developed by a team at Google led by Rob Pike. Over an hour, Andrew Gerrand from the Go team will provide an overview of Go, explaining why it exists, and what sets it apart from today's popular programming languages. 2010 Jan 27	Google Wave Extensions Google Wave APIs more... Google Wave is a product that helps users communicate and collaborate on the web. A "wave" is equal parts conversation and document, where users can almost instantly communicate and work together with richly formatted text, photos, videos, maps, and more. Google Wave is also a platform with a rich set of open APIs that allow developers to embed waves in other web services and to build extensions that work inside waves. In our presentation we will feature how developers can create extensions from idea to code with some of the most popular Wave extensions to date by the developers themselves. 2009 Dec 2	Christmas Social Android, Google Earth APIs, Google Maps APIs, OpenSocial more... Ho Ho! Well its the time of year when we frantically rush to finish our work, shop for gifts and plan for the holidays ahead. Fret not though. To reflect on the short but fruitful year of gtug Melbourne, we are going to make Wednesdays meeting a short mostly social event instead. We will have a brief presentation on what has occurred in gtug and Google technologies across this last year. We will then give a sneak peek of our plans for the year ahead. And then it'll be on for eggnog, mince pies and socialising. Or off to your chores if you need to escape :) For those who aren't naughty and fill out the registration form (to be posted midday) we will also have some very Googley door prizes to give away* So take a moment to catch-up with a fellow developer, find some last tech tips for the year and enjoy yourself before the Xmas madness takes hold... and come along! :) Cheers Leon *assuming Santa's little care package arrives in time. 2009 Nov 4	OpenSocial (with Lonely Planet) OpenSocial more... Make a social connection as the developer team at Lonely Planet Labs guide us through how they have used OpenSocial to enhance the user experience and build a community. Lead developer Julian Doherty will be on hand to discuss and give an overview of the OpenSocial platform. With frank discussions on why it was chosen amongst others, alongside demos of gadgets, the Lonely Planet APIs developed and detailed code examples, it promises to be a rather sociable event ;) We will also have a sneak preview of the Google Wave widget Trippy, which was jointly developed by the Google and Lonely Planet teams. You definetely won't want to miss this.
