Parsing some XML into a list? Most apps are. We'll look at using ContentProviders to store your data; Loaders to fetch it; and Lists to display it. We'll also take a quick look at asynchronously loading bitmaps in a list to make for buttery smooth scrolling. Come check it out.

Learn some of the finer points of the Eclipse MAT and how to wield it to find and remove memory leaks in your applications. The presentation will consist of a high level overview of the tools followed by a real world demonstration with both leaking and correct code from problem detection to solution. We will also cover some best practices pieced together from experience and the web including how to properly use a WebView without leaking, how to use WeakReference, and what to do if a third party library leak is unavoidable.

Writing Device Drivers whereas once a fairly specialized skill has become less so over time. The explosion of smartphones and tablets running Android for example have mandated that device drivers require less time to write and integrate into the system. In this talk we present an overview on how to write a device driver for Android/Linux to support an optical touchpad for Gingerbread. We discuss the event handling mechanism that is part of the Android framework and how events are propagated to the user application from the Linux kernel.

What actually happens at an event?

Any attendees that want to will have 60-90 seconds to present ideas for new startup ventures. We then crowd source the favorites and form teams around those ideas. Teams are between 4-10 people, and consist of about 50% technical people and 50% non-technical. You then spend the entire weekend getting advice from professional mentors, and building a proof of concept, demo, or sometimes even a finished product, to present in front of a panel of judges on Sunday night.

Most ideas are web & tech focused, but almost any new business needs a web, marketing, and business strategy regardless if it is tech centric.

Google Technology User Groups and Startup Weekend are joining forces to help developers and entrepreneurs become more successful!

We know that during a Startup Weekend event there isn't a lot of time to learn new things. You come in with the tools you have in your belt, and you do the best you can with those. But sometimes those tools aren't enough, which is why we're running this pre-Startup Weekend technical bootcamp!

Nathan Weston - User Interface Design Lead at Approach IT - Nathan has been designing interfaces for a decade now. Nathan is currently designing the interfaces for a Cisco database reporting and analysis tool, but has spent most of the last few years deep in the nuts and bolts of interactive advertising design handling CRM, mobile, and voting systems as an art director. His love of animation and compulsive need to research have made his designs extremely successful across a broad array of media and devices.Bill Townsley - Art Director at Bottle Rocket Apps - Bill has over 11 years of design experience. His primary focus has been centered around UI/UX design for many media types including mobile, web, and gaming. Bottle Rocket will be hosting the monthly Dallas Android Developer meetup, providing an opportunity to see our offices, as well as hear from several of our employees about our development process.  We don't claim to have all the answers, but we have had our share of challenges, and so we want to help pass on what we've learned to other developers who might be experiencing the same issues.   It will be fairly informal, so attendees should come with any questions they have (about any part of the process) to ask our experts!

Come to the big Greenhill building at 14131 Midway Rd in Addison, park outside and take the elevators up to the 5th floor.  We'll notify security so there shouldn't be a problem getting in.  Up on the 5th floor, they'll be signs to the meeting area where we'll be giving our presentation.

Food will be available starting at 6:30, and we'll aim to start the presentation around 7:00.  The office will be open for informal tours before and after the presentation.
