What Makes Android Tick
What Makes Android Tick. Paul Danset will give a talk on Android Internals - Including key differences: Android v. Linux.
** We have very limited seating, so check out Paul's slide deck presented earlier, if the context is right for your attendance.http://goo.gl/kFIua
In late February, there were 300 million Android phones world wide and 850K new ones added each day -- just 3+ years since launch. If this number holds, there will be over a half billion Android phones on the planet by the end of the year. This makes Android the largest Linux "distro", by far. Yet Android is quite a different beast from traditional Linux. This talk will cover key differences between them as well as Android internals. Some of these differences are getting gradually bridged. For example, the mainline Linux kernel has most of the Android-isms merged in 3.3rc*. There are also user space efforts to getting Android and traditional Linux coexist.
Paul Danset is a Sr Software Engineer. Currently working on an Android-based mobile robot for the Seattle Robothon competition in early June.

Google sponsored HTML5 Hack-a-Thon!
Over the past year, the web application ecosystem has been growing at an accelerating pace. Faster browsers and powerful web platforms like HTML5 have enabled developers to switch from native code to web based apps. That’s why the Google Chrome and Commerce teams are holding several HTML5 Web App hackathons around the United States in early August. This is a great opportunity for developers to socialize, network, and play with the latest web APIs. During the hackathons, we'll cover the end-to-end process of developing an HTML5 application, publicizing with Chrome Web Store, and finally monetizing with In-App Payments. In true hackathon style, participants will have the opportunity to create teams and work on a project together. At the end of the day, participants will present what they have created, and vote on the best apps or games. And of course we’ll have some awesome prizes for the winners.
Below is the itinerary for the day:
11:45-12pm - Check-in 12-1:30pm - Lunch is served & Presentation 1:30-2pm - Pitches & Team organization 2-7pm - Hacking 7-8pm - Dinner is served & Finish hacking 8-9pm - Drinks, Presentations & Voting

February Meeting - Android Demo Day
Since many of us are attending the Google Android Dev Lab the week before, I think it would be great to keep the momentum going by presenting the Apps we're building the following week.
Please send me your name (and what your App does, if you know already) if you'd like to participate. This is open to any GTUG member that's developed an Android application (you don't have to attend the Google Dev Lab). Be prepared to:

- Talk about your experience using the Android platform
- Impart any tips or wisdom for other Android developers
